They probably do, but not to the extent that we all imagine them to.

It's hard to see how the Chinese would become a worldwide power without overseas possesions and colonies. A regional power to be sure, but they have historic and bitter rivalries with the Koreans, Japanese, and Vietnamese. They also have an unresolved conflict with Taiwan, a Muslim uprising in the far west, the Tibetan question, and the emergence of an economically powerfully and soon to be more populous India directly to the south. No matter how much their Navy and Army grows, they still will only be a threat to their immediate neighbors. With a nuclear armed world, China can ill-afford a conflict with India or Pakistan, let alone Russia, the US and the West. The emergence of nuclear arms and the fact that several countries have them (9 total, and 10 if you count Iran) makes the age of worldwide empires obsolete. Many say that China will eventually take over much of Siberia, but I don't believe for a second that Russia is letting that go without a fight. Russia wont even relinquish a handful of sparsely inhabited Japanese islands that they hold. What we are looking at is a multi polar world. The Anglo-US alliance is alive and well and covers much of the Anglosphere. Russia has shown itself pretty testy over former Soviet territory and will be so in the future. Europe may look like they're in decline, but they have the solid economic anchors of Germany and France. The Muslim empire could coalesce around the newly free "republics" of the Arab Spring. And then there's China. There's just too many regional powers that prevent anyone from just coming in and just taking over.

When I lived there, they hadn't been allowed to preach for some time. Instead they sat on commuter trains with the magazines spread out beside them in a manner which invited conversation. What they are evidently doing now is preventing them from giving these magazines to non-Witnesses. The religion itself is not banned. What the law is saying now is that there is to be no proselytizing. If a someone wanted to become a Witness, he or she'd have to seek them out, not the other way around. All over the former Soviet Union, JWs are looked upon as Scientologists are here - a dirty and money laundering cult which infests and destroys families.
Russia has never been particularly inviting to new religions. They have a huge skinhead movement there, and it wasn't recommended to go out the night of April 20th, Hitler's birthday. I never even knew when Hitler's birthday was or even cared until I was there.

Another gem from The Finished Mystery (p57)
by outsmartthesystem inspeaking of ct russell - "and for 25 years had such distressing hemorrhoids that it was impossible for him to rest in the easiest chair" - the finished mystery - 1917 - page 57. wow.

To me it just demonstrates how foolish and out of touch the authors were (Clayton Woodworth and George Fisher). What good could possibly by gained by saying that CT Russell had hemmoroids for the last 25 years of his life? Perhaps an attempt to gather sympathy for the man, but they could have just generalized it and said that he had medical issues that prevented him from sitting down during extended periods of time.
I read about what happened to those two authors. Fisher disassociated himself from Rutherford in the 20's and died shortly after. Woodworth, however, was the originator of all sorts of quack theories. He disapproved of aluminum cookware, ranted against vaccines, slammed the germ "theory", and made a new calendar with renamed months and days. But his lasting contribution was the "no blood" policy. Woodworth was a quack wannabe physician in the mold of L. Ron Hubbard.

Got Disfellowshipped!
by time2keepmoving inwell, i was disfellowshipped about 2 weeks ago.
i was in it for ten years and it was 9 years and 11 months too long.
i honestly don't know why it took me so long to do my research on this organization.

We almost need a ceremony for disfellowhipping, kind of like a bar mitzvah of sorts. Have a guy dress up in a suit and play the part of the elder as he ceremoniously disfellowships you with such pompous words like "To thee I do disfellowship!". Then the party begins, the band starts up, and and the booze starts flowing.

US Debt clock
by diamondiiz inhttp://www.usdebtclock.org/index.html.
for those who might think that us has a chance of getting out of their debt without defaulting or hyperiunflation in the near future.
at present all eyes are focused on europe and us dollar strengthens but once the european mess is dealt with, with whatever the outcome, the focus will return on us debt and you can bet your dollar the us dollar will drop.

At the risk of sounding like Ron Paul, I openly wonder what the budget and accompanying deficit would look like if we eliminated every last penny of foreign aid and foreign military expenditures. At very least let's run the numbers and see where that leaves us.

JW Children in Meetings
by blue_summmer20 inhi my first post.. for the people that grew up in the religon, do you have any memory of being spanked for not sitting still in the meeting?
i see kids acting like kids but the parents take them out and spank them for something like not sitting still.
some of my worst memories are my father taking me out for a beating with a belt or his hand.

I was so scared of my father that I knew better than to misbehave at the meetings or assemblies. I heard an awful lot of other kids being hit after acting up. Kids aren't meant to sit and be quiet and still for 2 hours. They trained us pretty well though. To this day I can sit through just about anything and keep a straight face.

Falling Away
by Blueblades ini understand that between 1970 and 1995, one-third of the jehovah's witnesses worldwide left the organization.
the figure is 55% for those in the u.s.a.these figures would seem to mean that there are a lot of dissatisfied jw's!
if you were to ask a jw's,why so many would want to leave if there is such a wonderful atmosphere of love among the witnesses, could they give you a good reason?

You'll probably get some babble about when it's so close to the time of the end, Satan and his demons are working overtime to deceive as many as possible. My grandma keeps on going on about how they are not calling it the "last days" anymore, but rather the "last hour". I suppose the "last hour" will eventually be refined to "last minutes" (plural) and then "last minute" (singular) and then "last seconds" (plural) and finally "last second" (singular).
If it goes on further than that maybe they will come up with the "last nanoseconds".

I agree that the real challenge will be getting JW participation. They wont want to be filmed. Who does unless they know exactly what you are going to do with the footage? PBS did a documentary not too long ago called "Knocking" where they shadowed JWs out in service. You might want to go that route and just omit the fact that you are including dissenting voices in the documentary. The WT will send one of their PR reps if you would be interested in questioning them. They have a team of PR people who routinely give press interviews and make statements.

I don't like genocide
by nancy drew inthe other day i was thinking again about what was at the core of my feelings about the wtbs and i realized that i don't feel right about anything that requires genocide for it to exist.
when i think about the "paradise earth" relying on the death of 7 billion humans or the hebrew scripture loaded with extermination orders for anyone who got in the way i feel a wave of unhappiness.
during the time i was in the org i kept thinking surely at the end of the 1000 years happiness won't exist on the backs of 99% of humanity.

I wouldn't call the WT version of Armageddon 'genocide'. As you can see on every WT new system illustration, there are people of all races represented. As proposed, Armageddon would be more in the lines of a jihad or holy war against unbelievers.
I always openly wondered about the sheer amount of unburied bodies. How would a few million Witnesses, disproportionately spread around the world dispose of these bodies before they really begin to rot. Would we be organized into burial squads to head over to Egypt, Syria, and Saudi Arabia where there are virtually no Witnesses present to bury the bodies of the infidels and pagans? How about Pakistan, India, and China? That would be a few billion mounds of stink to get through.
One of the newer GB members gave a talk at a convention a few years back and tried to give a few answers about the big A and the subsequent cleanup. As for the destruction, Jehovah could use radiation. As for the bodies, he theorized that Jehovah could just zap and vaporize them. The thought of that really makes me realize how out of touch with reality these people are.
